A long weekend out of the city with friends, comfortably spent at the Chateau Tongariro. No snow in sight, actually nothing much in sight but drifting mist and solid rain, gauged by the appearance or disappearance of a small alpine tree on the ridge nearby. The countryside is water logged and flooding changed the landscape. I had wanted to go on a photographic expedition, the glorious colours and rattling rushing streams, but warnings were out for bad weather, trampers advised to stay put, so the information centre 50 metres up the road was as far as we got.

The views are stunning from the stately old building, our room was on the top floor, up there we looked at clouds and drifting mist through the dormer window. I liked the original leadlight glass windows in the photo. Thanks Gwen.
